1I have never heard about antler chews for dogs. What is this about?
Antlers have been around as chews for animals in the forest since the beginning of time because once a year all antlers SHED. All animals crave the calcium, and need it for their bones. The three most popular antlers you will find in the United States are Deer, Elk, and Moose. Deer and Elk are the most familiar to most as there are millions of them in the wild as well as farmed and processed through slaughterhouses for their meat and antlers. (Yuk!) Moose are a much more limited population found only in the wild, as they do not survive in captivity. The difference between the three types of antler chews is substantial. Deer are smaller in core size and dangerous in a "jawbreaker" kind of way. Elk is in the middle with a more porous marrow that is easily dug out. Moose is the densest, with a more calcified marrow, making it a longer lasting chew for dogs that need a chewing challenge. Size appropriate pieces last for months of daily chewing, and are a more economical choice for the owner. Acadia Antlers does not buy antlers off of hunted animals. We buy them fresh out of the forests from the people who find them. No animals were harmed in the making of our chews.

6What are the benefits of Acadia Moose Antlers versus other dog chews? Also, what is the benefit of moose antlers over deer and elk?
Acadia Antlers are a long lasting chew that the dog will not chew through. They will gradually grind them down. It is a great way to take the tartar and plaque off their teeth too! Moose antlers are denser than deer or elk, so it proves to be an economical choice too because it will last longer. Acadia Antlers are just CALCIUM – they are the perfect chew for dogs with allergies (they are hypoallergenic) and also for dogs with sensitive stomachs. If your dog suffers from Pancreatitis, Acadia Antlers are a perfect dog chew as they contain NO FAT, only calcium!

In addition, AcadiaAntlers are a practical addition to your emergency preparedness kit. Consider for your Tornado/Hurricane/Blizzard Emergency Kit for Your Dog — Include an Acadia Antlers selection for your pets, to keep them calm and content during difficult and stressful times.
7Are Acadia Antlers better than bones for chewing?
Acadia Antlers does not promote chewing of bones and especially marrow bones, but here are 10 REASONS WHY IT’S A BAD IDEA TO GIVE YOUR DOG A BONE listed on the FDA.GOV website.

1. Broken teeth. This may call for expensive veterinary dentistry.

2. Mouth or tongue injuries. These can be very bloody and messy and may require a trip to see your veterinarian.

3. Bone gets looped around your dog’s lower jaw. This can be frightening or painful for your dog and potentially costly to you, as it usually means a trip to see your veterinarian.

4. Bone gets stuck in esophagus, the tube that food travels through to reach the stomach. Your dog may gag, trying to bring the bone back up, and will need to see your veterinarian.

5. Bone gets stuck in windpipe. This may happen if your dog accidentally inhales a DogBone3small enough piece of bone. This is an emergency because your dog will have trouble breathing. Get your pet to your veterinarian immediately!

6. Bone gets stuck in stomach. It went down just fine, but the bone may be too big to pass out of the stomach and into the intestines. Depending on the bone’s size, your dog may need surgery or upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, a procedure in which your veterinarian uses a long tube with a built-in camera and grabbing tools to try to remove the stuck bone from the stomach.

7. Bone gets stuck in intestines and causes a blockage. It may be time for surgery.

8. Constipation due to bone fragments. Your dog may have a hard time passing the bone fragments because they’re very sharp and they scrape the inside of the large intestine or rectum as they move along. This causes severe pain and may require a visit to your veterinarian.

9. Severe bleeding from the rectum. This is very messy and can be dangerous. It’s time for a trip to see your veterinarian.

10. Peritonitis. This nasty, difficult-to-treat bacterial infection of the abdomen is caused when bone fragments poke holes in your dog’s stomach or intestines. Your dog needs an emergency visit to your veterinarian because peritonitis can kill your dog.

Stick with Acadia Antlers Moose Antler dog chews. They are solid calcium, they are non-splintering, and there is no mess or odor. Your dogs will not chew through them, they will gradually grind them down. It is a great way to keep tartar and plaque from building up on their teeth. Always supervise your dog while enjoying their chews!

All of our size recommendations are listed in Acadia Antlers 101, and by all means, please feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
11Can I order a specific shape/cut?

12Are Acadia Antlers safer for my dogs teeth than other hard dog chews?
I have had many conversations with vets and even did a seminar at a veterinarian school on this subject — people don’t always buy “size appropriate” for their dog. They want to buy an iddy biddy piece because it is cheap and then a big dog chomps on it like a pretzel rod causing damage. Size appropriate is key. That is why Acadia Antlers are such a good chew — deer and elk antlers don’t come as big as our big pieces!! We can get our pitbulls, great danes, and mastiffs size appropriate chews whenever they need them!! When purchased in the appropriate size for the dog, the dog does not chew through them, they gradually grind them down. It is a great way to take the tartar and plaque off their teeth too! If you have any questions about the Acadia Antler size appropriate for your dog, please contact us and we’d be happy to assist with your selection.
